Punish absentee MPs, councillors – headman

A TRADITIONAL leader in Sinda District of Eastern Province has urged the electorate to vote out leaders who did not consider them in the last five years.
In an interview, headman Nyamutuma Phackson Njobvu wondered why some leaders who had claimed to be busy four years ago were now available and had started showing up.
He urged the electorate to evaluate leaders from the president to councillors and weigh their performance in the last five years of office.
Headman Nyamutuma said those who had not performed should be removed to try others.
“I want to urge my fellow village headmen to be careful because we have remained with few months before we go to the general election. Let’s tell our people to evaluate candidates wisely. Let’s not get finished products to be MPs, council chairpersons, or councilors. Let’s get people with a good heart and good intentions for our communities,” he said.
Headman Nyamutuma said politicians who did not value poor people should not be allowed in the corridors of power.
“We want leaders that look after the poor, and let’s see that those that never picked up our calls, those that told us they were busy are not voted for. Let’s not go and vote for ‘I’m busy’ leaders. We want leaders who respect our views and concerns. Those who placed us in a wire should be placed in a wire, too. Tibafake ku wire kwamene enze anafaka ise [let’s abandon those who abandoned us],” he said.
Headman Nyamutuma said the current regime had not performed to the expectations of the people, warning that if nothing changed, it would be voted out, too.
He said the UPND government was not considerate of the poor people as it looked more like a government of the rich.
“The PF government was good compared to UPND. The previous regime respected every traditional leader, be it village headmen, indunas or chiefs. But this government treats us as if we don’t exist. It values chiefs who are paid money rather than the village headmen who live and stay with people,” Headman Nyamutuma said.
