Ifyamuselu going on in this country
By Adrian Mwanza
THE people of Zambia should not be cowards but defend their democracy because there are abominations happening in the country, Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu has said.
Speaking when he featured on Millennium TV Monday, Mpundu said Zambians should realise that democracy was under serious threat and it was their duty to defend it.
“Zambians should be able to defend their democracy, which at the moment is under threat,” he said.
Mpundu said Zambians should not expect free and fair elections in August because of compromised key institutions such as the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
Mpundu said what was happening at ECZ fyamuselu (is disgusting) because the people there were known United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres.
He said there was a very big difference between cadres in the former ruling Patriotic Front (PF) and those in the UPND.
“In the PF cadres were found in markets and streets while under the UPND, cadres have been stationed in institutions of governance such as the [Zambia] Police [Service], ECZ, DEC [Drug Enforcement Commission] and the Judiciary,” Mpundu said.
He said ECZ had already been doing imingalato (dirty schemes) to disadvantage opposition political parties.
ECZ was like a referee that needed to be fair in the manner it dealt with political parties in elections.
“Ifilichitika ku ECZ fyamuselu [what is happening at ECZ is disgusting] and we started voicing out after ba [Ms] Mwangala Zaloumis was appointed. Yes, she is academically qualified, but she is a known UPND cadre who definitely disadvantages the opposition,” Mpundu said.
He said the fact that Zaloumis openly campaigned for the UPND in the past should have automatically been excluded from the whole process.
Mpundu said other individuals such as [commissioner] Macdonald Chipenzi and Zevyanji Sinkala were known politically exposed individuals but had been given positions at ECZ.
He said the integrity of the August elections had already been undermined and compromised as a result of individuals aligned with a particular political party being in charge.
Mpundu challenged Zambians to wake up and protect the constitution.
