Chief Mwamba rejects ECZ delimitation plan

SENIOR Chief Mwamba of the Bemba speaking people in Northern Province has rejected the proposed creation of an additional constituency in Kasama district
Speaking during a delimitation meeting in Kasama yesterday, the traditional leader said the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) did not adequately consult the people before advancing the proposal.
He asked the ECZ to go back and inform its leadership that the people of Kasama had rejected the proposed delimitation without their input.
Senior Chief Mwamba said it was clear that ECZ had a predetermined outcome.
“Go back mubwelelemo mubebe ati ku Kasama nabakana [Go back and tell them that the people of Kasama have refused] constituency imo [one constituency]. Icho ndelandila nababene bamayo ba presenter nabo nabamona[The presenter can also understand why I am saying this] how vast the area is,” he said.
Chief Mwamba said the problem was that people were selfish and there was no way Kasama could just be allocated just one more constituency.
He said the ECZ must genuinely consider the views of the people instead of making decisions without proper consultation and due diligence.
Speaking at the same meeting, Kasama Central parliamentary aspiring candidate Isdore Tetamashimba said the people of Kasama were proposing four new constituencies and not one as suggested by ECZ.
He said Kasama was vast and needed more constituencies just like Lusaka and other areas.
“I just want to urge ECZ to consider our proposal of four constituencies in Kasama and not one so that service delivery can be enhanced,” he said.
