Mweetwa regrets Chawama ‘schoolboy mistakes’

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says the party made schoolboy mistakes in the just-ended Chawama parliamentary by-election.
The UPND lost to the opposition Forum for Development and Democracy (FDD).
In an interview, Mweetwa said the party made some mistakes and that cost it the Chawama parliamentary seat last month.
“I must say that we made some schoolboy mistakes which actually cost us the seat, but we are going to learn from the same mistakes,” he said.
Mweetwa said the UPND had learned lessons from the Chawama by-election ahead of the August 13 polls.
“We have gotten some experience from the mistakes in Chawama and it will not happen again,” he said.
However, Mweetwa commended the people of Chawama for the peaceful manner in which the election was conducted.
“I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the people of Kasama. They did the same thing in the just-ended Kasama mayoral elections. I want to commend the people of Chawama and Kasama for their exemplary behaviour in the just-ended by-elections, where we did not record any forms of violence,” he said.
Mweetwa said the peace was a testament that the country had evolved and did not tolerate violence anymore.
He said he was confident that the August 13 elections would be free and fair because President Hakainde Hichilema detested any form of violence.
