YOU WILL LOSE UNLESS…
…Changala warns opposition to unite or brace for August defeat
By Mast Reporter
THE opposition must forget about winning the August 13 general elections if they don’t bow to demands of the people calling for a united opposition, senior citizen and political activist Brebner Changala has said.
In an interview with The Mast following the splitting of votes by the opposition in the just-ended Kasama mayoral by-election, Changala described opposition political party leaders as traitors who had betrayed public trust by refusing to heed the persistent calls for a united opposition.
“To the people of Zambia and to the opposition in this country, you must agree that Zambia is under siege. We must agree that Zambia is being misgoverned. We must agree that if the UPND wins the August 13, 2026 elections, we will be in serious problems to the extent of running in the bush like wild animals,” he warned.
Changala urged opposition leaders to see the danger of re-electing the UPND, allowing it to be in office beyond August.
The opposition should realise that the fight for a united opposition was about removing President Hakainde Hichilema from power to restore order and national unity, which was at the high risk of collapse.
“My genuine appeal to the opposition from all manner of society is to see the danger of the UPND as a political party. And once you see the danger that we are being divided, we are being abused and that we have lost human dignity and freedoms and liberties, it is incumbent upon our political leaders to unite, and that’s non-negotiable,” he said.
Changala said opposition leaders in Zambia were the worst betrayers of the current generation.
He said the opposition leaders should realise that Zambians had already decided to change government and the only stumbling block was the opposition political parties.
“I must tell the opposition leaders that you are the worst betrayers of this generation and the country. You have seen that the people of Zambia, in their collective millions, are ready for change. And that’s when you are playing with their destiny and ambition. Stop it. You come together, forget about your political inclinations. Look at the better side of this country. Look at the unity and security of brotherhood and sisterhood,” Changala said.
He urged opposition leaders Dr Fred M’membe, Highvie Hamududu, Harry Kalaba, Nason Msoni, Brian Mundubile, Given Lubinda and the entire opposition to think Zambia first.
“I call upon all opposition leaders to save this country and save the people of Zambia. We must listen to the silent whispers of the suffering masses who have lost their dignity, who have no shelter. Those who have been hit by the high cost of living and by generally bad governance,” he said.
Changala warned that failure to unite and remove Hichilema from power in August would result in most opposition leaders going to prison on trumped charges out of vengeance, and some running away from Zambia to flee from persecution.
“We have an enemy within us, within the territory of the Republic of Zambia. And that is a grouping of men and women who are thwarting us on daily basis.
And I appeal to you, leaders, to look at the plight of your colleagues in jail. Look at those who are living and those who are dead. You can see an unreasonable impasse where our sixth president [Edgar Lungu] cannot be buried because of the ego of one individual who is using State power to hold on to a dead body,” he said.
“Using state power to hold on to the body of our former president. And these problems can only be resolved by a united people with a resolved leadership that is determined to bring back the Zambia we want,” Changala said.
Zambians had an opportunity to correct the mistake they made in 2021.
“We have an opportunity to correct the mistake we made in 2001. That mistake was made by many and messed by myself and OCIDA. We supported the monster and we are paying a heavy price. We are living in a country with fear, where nobody can talk. For the first time in history, we have people in exile. Running away from their country,” said Changala.
