Zambia, Czechia build ties through education

By Mast Reporter

THE Czech government has pledged its continued support to Zambia’s development agenda through the provision of fully funded scholarships for Zambian students to study in Czechia.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Zambia has encouraged Zambian students to take advantage of the Master’s and PhD opportunities on offer, stressing that education is key to driving growth in critical sectors.

The new Ambassador Jiří Kyrian, during his presentation of credentials to President Hakainde Hichilema recently, acknowledged the continuing partnership through support to Zambia’s education sector.

During a recent interview, one scholarship beneficiary, 25-year-old Yaliwe Nkhoma, described her Master’s studies in Agri-Food Systems and Rural Development as a dream come true.

“The application process was clear and transparent, and the embassy guided us every step of the way. Once in Czechia, I found the people very supportive, and the education system is excellent. I am grateful every day for this chance,” Nkhoma said.

She added that her experience has gone beyond the classroom.

“I have met students from all over the world, and we learn so much from each other. The courses being offered in English made the transition much easier. For me, this opportunity has shown that nothing is impossible,” she said.

Nkhoma said her ultimate goal was to return home with the knowledge and skills to strengthen Zambia’s rural development.

“The agri-food sector is crucial for our communities. I want to use what I’ve learned here to help Zambians in rural areas improve their livelihoods,” she said.

The Czech government scholarships cover tuition fees and living expenses. Applications for the 2025 intake remain open until September 30.

“By investing in Zambian students, we are contributing to Zambia’s growth in agriculture, engineering, ICT, and governance. At the same time, Czech universities benefit from Zambian expertise, especially in areas like forestry and community development. It’s a partnership of shared knowledge,” said head of Cooperation at the embassy Milan Kalc recently.
