Pray against suicide, says NGO

SWALA Pilu, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has urged government to declare a national day of prayer and fasting in response to the alarming rise in suicide cases across the country.
Executive Director Mary Kufanga described the growing number of suicides as “extremely worrying” and called for urgent collective action.
“We are calling on the government of Zambia to declare a National Day of Prayer and Fasting against suicide, and we have pledged to work hand in hand with government ministries, health services, faith leaders and community groups to reduce the rising numbers of suicide in the country,” Kufanga said.
She noted that suicide cases in Zambia have continued to rise, with families losing loved ones while the problem remains largely unaddressed.
“We all know people are going through a lot and sitting back and doing nothing will cost more lives,” she said.
Kufanga stressed that a national day of prayer and fasting would not only unite faith and community leaders but also raise awareness, reduce stigma, and mobilise prevention efforts nationwide.
She further pledged her organisation’s continued collaboration with other stakeholders in tackling the crisis.
“We urge the government to act now, convene stakeholders, declare the day and support a national campaign that combines spiritual support with life-saving measures,” Kufanga said.
She also emphasised the importance of training volunteers in suicide awareness, recognising early warning signs, and strengthening referral pathways to ensure timely interventions.
