Lungu burial talks begin

DISCUSSIONS between the government and the Lungu family have started in a bid to resolve the three-month impasse surrounding the burial of late former president Edgar Lungu.
Former president Lungu died in South Africa on June 5, 2025 and his burial has been marred by controversy.
According to a joint statement issued by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa and family spokesperson Makebi Zulu, the parties have agreed to open discussions on the way forward with the hope of bringing the outstanding issues to an end.
“The government of the Republic of Zambia and the family of former president Edgar Chagwa Lungu announced the commencement of formal discussions, making a significant step towards resolving the three-month impasse. A mediated process will be employed to resolve outstanding issues with the jointly appointed mediators. The parties recognise that building trust is an essential step to reaching a mutually agreeable solution necessary for genuine reconciliation and healing,” Kangwa and Zulu said.
They said both parties had pledged to engage in the discussions with sincerity, prioritising reconciliation, unity, and deep respect for the late president’s distinguished service and the wishes of his family.
They also urged Zambians to desist from making statements that could work against the negotiations.
“The government and family extend their heartfelt gratitude to the people of Zambia for their patience and understanding. We urge all citizens to refrain from making statements that could heighten tensions as we work towards a respectful and dignified outcome. The nation will be kept informed of the discussions and next steps in due course. We encourage the nation to continue praying for the former first family and our beloved Zambia,” they said.
