Ramaphosa snub a lesson to Zambia – Changala

PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa has not congratulated President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election 56 days after the August 13 election because it was marred by serious controversies and disputes, says governance activist Brebner Changala.
Commenting on Ramaphosa’s congratulatory message to Brazilian President-elect Lula Da Silvia, Changala said Ramaphosa’s contrasting actions show endorsement for Brazil and disapproval of Zambia.
“By congratulating Lula in less than 24 hours and keeping quiet on President Hakainde Hichilema for 56 days, Ramaphosa is showing endorsement for Brazil and disapproval of what Zambians decided on August 13,” he said.
He said Zambia’s August 13 general elections were marred by irregularities cited by international observers including the EU, AU and SADC observer missions, and that as a champion of democracy in SADC, Ramaphosa was careful in his judgment of electoral outcomes in member states.
“How can a neighbour and fellow SADC head of state celebrate an election in South America overnight and remain silent on Zambia for almost two months? It suggests he has reservations about our process. His silence is speaking volumes about how he views our election,” he said.
He said while Ramaphosa’s quick congratulations to Lula shows he recognises a credible election, his prolonged silence on Zambia raises questions about the credibility and legitimacy of the August 13 polls.
“Ramaphosa must tell Zambians whether he recognises the outcome of August 13. His silence is loud,” Changala said.
He called on Pretoria to issue a statement clarifying its position and respecting the will of the Zambian people.
