Nothing to celebrate, Zambians in pain – CF
By Thandizo Banda
THE CITIZENS First (CF) says it boycotted yesterday’s 62nd Independence Anniversary saying there is nothing to celebrate.
The party’s secretary general Martin Kaluba said CF, led by Harry Kalaba, could not take part in the festivities held annually on October 24 since 1964 while Zambians were allegedly enduring pain.
“Governance challenges have eroded the meaning of independence,” Kaluba said
He cited the incarceration of colleagues, including leader of the opposition Tonse Alliance Brian Mundubile, his vice Makebi Zulu and 16 others.
Most of the detainees were yet to be taken to court.
He said the family of murdered former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was still mourning and government was yet to issue a comprehensive report on what transpired on the day he was killed.
Kaluba said true independence was anchored on freedom of expression and freedom of movement, which were being trampled on.
“People currently cannot speak freely or criticize government. Independence is about freedom of expression and freedom of movement. Positive criticism is healthy for the country,” he said.
Kaluba said the decision to stay away from the national celebrations is a matter of principle.
